Quality is our trademark.

Applicants who have not been previously enrolled with us are required to complete our enrolment form, which includes two referees and may be required to complete a numeracy and literacy assessment. They must also attend our pre-enrolment day held before the start of the retail course.

Industry requirements are the foremost consideration in all aspects of our retail sales course curriculum. Close links are maintained with local retailers for both the delivery of our retail courses and sales courses and to provide students with relevant retail work experience.

Our vision is to have a creative, fun and professional learning environment in which to share our knowledge, support and encourage students to reach their potential within the retail sales industry. On completing your retail course with us, you will have all the professional foundation requirements to meet the challenges in this dynamic industry.

Retail Bloom will give you the opportunity to gain work experience in the retail industry, this will give you a clear understanding of the workplace and the expectations of employers. There is also a high chance you will gain a permanent retail sales job placement after completing the work experience component and you will gain and form contacts and networks for job seeking in the future.

Our aim is to secure your employment in a retail sales environment that suits your personality and your individual flair. We have great relationships with the retail industry throughout the Bay of Plenty and further afield, and the Retail Bloom team work extremely hard to uphold the highest leading graduate placement standards.

At Retail Bloom we focus solely on practical and theory, on-site retail sales training for four days a week because the “Service Industry Training Organisation” recognises that it takes at least 20 weeks to complete the Retail Bloom sales training and achieve 60 level 2, unit standard credits.

On successful completion of the New Zealand Certificate in Retail Level 2, students then have the opportunity to complete the New Zealand Certificate in Retail Level 3.

Its goals are:

  • An understanding of how people communicate
  • Using positive language each day (what can be done, not what can’t be done)
  • Great phone and people etiquette
  • Understanding different styles of communication
  • ‘Reading’ people to understand their needs
  • Finding your own style and flair in retail
  • Staying safe in the retail environment

We keep trainees excited by:

  • Getting them to do a selfie each day of their outfit
  • Start a ‘Style on the Street’ segment where they go out and nominate each day a ‘stylish’ person on the street
  • Get them to write stories each week about great, and not so great customer service experiences in the Retail environment (including cafés and restaurants in the food industry), and other service environments

Trainees complete assessment in this module on 1277, 1971, and 25046. If 62 was assessed the selfie factor may assist in building up a portfolio.

At this stage students will start to think about a project they will complete over the 17 week course on subjects like:

  • Fast fashion vs sustainable ethical and NZ local fashion.
  • A project around makeovers – After looking at Gok Wan, or Lisa O’Neill (Farmers) and thinking about style makeovers.
  • Looking at Facebook pages like Makeup Geek etc. to develop inspiration in a retail environment.
  • Online shopping vs in store shopping – pros and cons.
  • Online presence – how these service streams can be incorporated into the Retail environment (like Max Shop’s Click and Collect option).
  • New trends in retailing (visit https://www.vendhq.com/university/retail-trends-and-predictions-2015)
  • Pop Up Shoppe and the ‘Buy quickly before it’s gone’ concept (GrabOne, Trade Me, NZSale etc).
  • Vintage – Up Cycling and living life in the ‘simple’ lane.
  • Social media – how Facebook helps people to buy – the influence of ‘Like and Share’.
  • A blog on their life unfolding as a Retail expert.

Its goals are:

  • Understanding what motivates people to buy – shop layouts – the science of retail (e.g. shoppers tend to enter a store and move to the left first so new stock is always on the left, sale stock at the back, or through the store)
  • Making sure trainees are aware of the demographics or types of shoppers (perhaps a case study on shopper age and types of shops they tend to shop at)
  • Staying safe in the retail environment
  • What makes customers comfortable in a retail shop (being greeted, looked after to the right level etc.)
  • Great food retail skills (checking on satisfaction levels etc).

We keep trainees excited by:

  • Getting them to video interview on their phone a few people they know of different ages and ask them where they shop, and why they shop there, and their customer service experiences there
  • Upselling and the role this plays in Retail
  • Getting trainees to do ‘Mystery Shoppers’ in this module and report back on their experiences
  • Getting them to present, or dress themselves up in teams to represent what the theme for some retail environments is i.e. what is acceptable at JB Hi Fi may not be acceptable at Bunnings, or brand identification at Farmers can be different to brand identification at Glassons or Max.
  • Get them to look at styles in the retail environment – the ‘LoneStar’ style vs the style of Takara or Bravo.

Trainees complete assessment in this module on 11941, 11942, 19583, 12003.

Its goals are:

      • Understanding how stock flows in and out of the store/cafe and stock levels
      • Upselling and the role this plays in the retail industry
      • How to process customer payments
      • How to work through a customer purchase with a customer (this is the final step of the foundation work Module one and two have built on).
      • How to work in a team in the retail environment (the group project will connect to this aim).

We keep trainees excited by:

Having them complete work experience, and learn from this (this may mean video interviewing staff via phones, and uploading this to a specialised HTT retail blog?)

Trainees complete assessment in this module on 11958, 403, 406, 11938, and 11974.
